During the 2013-14 season, Jim Benning studied the Vancouver Canucks from afar.Months later, the former general manager of the Boston Bruins is unsure what went so drastically wrong for a franchise that only three years prior had represented the Western Conference in the Stanley Cup final. For whatever reason, Benning told the Associated Press, last year things didnt go as scripted.Vancouver finished fifth in the Pacific Division, 12th in the Western Conference, and did not qualify the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08.The punishment for missing the playoffs was harsh. GM Mike Gillis, coach John Tortorella and his top assistant, Mike Sullivan, were fired. In place of Gillis and Tortorella are Benning and Willie Desjardins, who are tasked with returning Vancouver to the playoffs. With the Canucks set to begin their season Oct. 8 in Calgary, here are some things to watch forTongueOWER PLAY: The Canucks learned what the New York Rangers had long known: Tortorella and Sullivan arent the remedies for a malfunctioning power play. Vancouver had the second-worst man advantage in the West a€” and fourth-worst in the NHL a€” last season, despite the presence of Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler and Jason Garrison.YOUTH MOVEMENT: By his own admission, Benning and the hockey operations department could make difficult verdicts about the construction of the team prior to the start of the season due to the play of prospects Bo Horvat, Nicklas Jensen, Hunter Shinkaruk and Linden Vey in preseason.Theyve given our group energy through the exhibition (season). These guys have scored, so its creating interesting scenarios and its going to make some tough decisions in the end, Benning said. Theyve had strong camps.NEW DESJARDINS: The disconnect between Tortorella and his team was evident on the last day of the Canucks 2013-14 season. The coach wanted the roster gutted, while his charges thought tweaks needed to be made in order for the team to qualify for the playoffs. Vancouver believes there will be more unity in 2014-15 with Tortorella replaced by Desjardins.Willie is the type of personality that the players all want to work hard for him, Benning said. Everywhere hes been, hes got buy in from players. He respects the players. He gets them to compete hard, to work hard every night. I think with his personality and the type of players and team (we have), its a good fit.KEEP ON ROLLING: Tortorella favoured a philosophy in which top players were overloaded with ice time. That will change under Desjardins, who told reporters in September that the Canucks want to play with four lines. To that end, Vancouver added forwards Radim Vrbata Nick Bonino and Derek Dorsett, and defenceman Luca Sbisa, to add depth to Vancouvers skaters. We want to get back to who we are, Benning said. Thats a hard working team when (we) dont have the puck (and) when we do have the puck, have the ability to use speed and skill to create scoring chances and take the puck to the net.CHARACTER CANUCKS: One intangible players, coaches and executives stress as being vital to a teams success is character. Benning is no different, as he praised the substance of the players he brought in this off-season.Theyre all hard-working, character guys, Benning said. We brought in skill players in Radim Vrbata and Nick Bonino. Derek Dorsett (is a) guy who will do whatever needs to be done to help the team. Luca Sbisa is a physical, stay-at-home defenceman. I would say the one quality they all have is that theyre all high character players. ZaDarius Smith Super Bowl Jersey . Chris Johnson singled with two outs off left-hander Jerry Blevins (1-1), and Schafer pinch ran. With a 2-2 count, Schafer ran on the pitch and Upton dropped a single in front of Bryce Harper. Schafer already was rounding third when Schafer bobbled the ball. Reggie White Super Bowl Jersey . The midfielder had an operation on Saturday, and is set to miss seven Premier League games, the third round of the FA Cup and the semifinals of the League Cup. https://www.packersrookiestore.com/Packe...ng-Jersey/ . General Manager Sam Presti said the three-time All-Star had knee swelling that would not subside, and the procedure was intended to solve the problem. He said doctors determined that a loose stitch was to blame for the swelling, that Westbrooks lateral meniscus has healed properly and the procedure was successful. Paul Hornung Super Bowl Jersey . The game got off to a less-than-ideal start for the Jets as Oliver Ekman-Larsson found a wide open net from the slot and opened the scoring for the Coyotes a lead in the first period, but Olli Jokinen answered back just over half a minute later. Montravius Adams Super Bowl Jersey . Top-seeded Djokovic, who is making only his second appearance this year after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over 54th-ranked Istomin of Uzbekistan. "It wasnt as easy as the scoreline indicates," said Djokovic, who has won in Dubai on four occasions.NEW YORK -- The old guard took care of this one for the Phillies -- with both their bats and their brains. Ryan Howard had four hits, including a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning, and Jimmy Rollins homered and scored four times to lead Philadelphia past the slumping New York Mets 5-4 on Saturday night. Chase Utley drove in two runs for the Phillies, who have won the first two games of the series against their NL East foes after dropping four straight to Toronto. Rollins, Utley and Howard, the All-Star core of Phillies teams that won five straight division titles and a World Series championship from 2007-11, combined to go 9 for 12 with four RBIs. "Yeah, it felt good. It felt like old times out there," Howard said. "If we can get everybody going all at the same time, itll be a force to be reckoned with." David Wright hit his first home run since opening day, ending the longest drought of his career, and had three RBIs. But the Mets wasted another great chance to score in the late innings, losing their season-worst fifth straight and eighth in nine games. Following some confusion in the eighth, Philadelphia reliever Mike Adams (2-1) escaped a major jam by retiring pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu on a bases-loaded comebacker to keep it tied. "Obviously, I had to make him swing the bat," Adams said. "I threw a two-seamer that ran down and made him hit my pitch." With runners on second and third earlier in the inning, the Phillies held a meeting at the mound and threw an intentional ball to Eric Campbell in his second major league plate appearance. Thats when Utley and catcher Carlos Ruiz noticed the 40-year-old Abreu, cut by Philadelphia near the end of spring training, getting ready in the dugout. Utley and Ruiz persuaded Adams to go after Campbell before Abreu had a chance to bat. "We decided to change our minds," Utley said. "We saw him coming up there. We try to see everything, but we dont always." Adams said the chat pumped him up, and Utley is "always on top of it." The intentional walk was called off and Campbell eventually took strike three. "That was pretty neat to watch," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. Rollins drew a two-out walk from Kyle Farnsworth (0-3) in the ninth and went to third on Utleys single. Howard followed with a line-drive single to centre. Jonathan Papelbon worked a hitless ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances. With a runner on second, he retired Wright on a foul popup to end it. A fruustrated Wright held his bat above his head most of the way back to the dugout, then lingered on an otherwise empty bench for a few minutes with the lumber still in his hand.dddddddddddd "The frustrating part is losing," Wright said. "An inning here, an inning there is costing us multiple games over the last few weeks." After the start was delayed 39 minutes by rain, the Phillies wasted no time jumping on Dillon Gee, who had a 7.46 ERA in nine previous starts against them. Philadelphia began the game with consecutive singles and a stolen base before Utleys sacrifice fly ended Gees career-best scoreless streak at 16 innings. Domonic Brown blooped an RBI single, but Gee dodged additional damage when Cody Asche lined out with the bases loaded. Wright tied it with a two-run shot on an 0-2 pitch from Kyle Kendrick, snapping a streak of 136 at-bats without a homer since March 31 against Washington. "I dont build my game around hitting home runs, so it wasnt too much of a monkey at all," Wright said. Rollins homered off the facing of the second deck in right to put Philadelphia ahead 3-2 in the second. Kendrick retired 14 of 15 batters after Wrights long ball and took a two-hitter into the sixth, when he walked leadoff man Juan Lagares. Daniel Murphy singled and Wright plopped an RBI double into right field, just beyond a diving Marlon Byrd. Campbell, with his parents taking pictures in the stands, was sent up to pinch-hit for his big league debut. He gave the Mets a 4-3 lead with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly against lefty reliever Jake Diekman -- and was all smiles while receiving a high-five from Murphy and congratulations in the dugout. "It was a real up and down day," Campbell said. Rollins legged out an infield single in the seventh and advanced on Scott Rices wild pitch. Utley doubled off the centre-field fence to tie it at 4. NOTES: Kendrick, hurt by poor run support, is 0-8 in 14 starts since beating the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 6 last season. ... Howard is 9 for 18 against Gee with six homers and 14 RBIs. Rollins is 11 for 22. ... Ben Revere made a terrific, tumbling catch in deep centre to rob Travis dArnaud of extra bases. ... LHP Cole Hamels (0-2, 7.02 ERA) will try again for his 100th career win when he makes his fourth start of the season Sunday in the series finale against LHP Jonathon Niese (2-2, 1.82). Hamels was hit hard in a 6-1 loss to Niese at home on April 29 and is 7-14 with a 4.65 ERA in 27 starts against New York. ' ' '

MINNEAPOLIS -- As his 23rd season as an NBA coach entered the home stretch, Rick Adelman looked tired. Tired of trying to wring a few more wins out of a talented, defensively deficient roster. Tired of getting on an airplane at midnight after a game and landing somewhere across the country at 3 a.m. Tired, most of all, of putting his wife Mary Kay and her lingering health issues second to a job that, when done right, is all-consuming. So when he finally decided to step away, announcing his retirement from the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, he did so with mixed feelings about the pressure-cooker life he is leaving behind and the one that awaits him. "It becomes your life, your familys life, an everyday routine," Adelman said of the NBA. "Its a real grind. You get some time off in the summer but its pretty much on your mind all the time, so theres some sadness but theres also a relief. Im ready and my wifes ready to move on to another phase. Were looking forward to that." Adelman and the Timberwolves had a mutual option in place in the four-year contract he signed in 2011. His announcement did not come as a surprise after the Wolves finished a disappointing 40-42, but it nevertheless marked an unceremonious end to a career that includes 1,042 victories, putting him eighth on the NBAs career list. He coached Western Conference powers in Portland and Sacramento and also had stops in Golden State and Houston. Adelman said the time is right for him to step aside and spend more time with Mary Kay, who has been treated for seizures over the last two years. He also thinks the Wolves need a fresh voice to help them try to persuade star power forward Kevin Love to remain in Minnesota. "If anything, I felt if I coached another year and then his future comes up and my future is gone, that makes it even harder," Adelman said. "I think its best for the organization to have somebody else coaching the team, give them a year to see what they can do and hear that voice. I think thats a much more positive situation for the organization. I feel strongly about that." After missing the playoffs for the third straight season, the 67-year-old Adelman decided it was time to walk away from one of the most quietly influential coaching careers in NBA history. The introverted coach worked below the radar for most of his career, but his impact on the league is unquestioned. Adelman won at least 50 games in a season 11 times in his career, led the Portland Trail Blazers to two NBA Finals appearances and then developed a post-passing offence in Sacramento that continues to influence the league. He had more modest success with Houston and Minnesota, but walks away with his fingerprints all over the league. While with the Kings, Adelman worked with assistant and former Princeton coach Pete Carril to fine-tune his famed "corner" offence, a precision system that maximized the talents of big men Chris Webber, Vlade Divac and Brad Miller, all of whom were gifted passers from the elbow of the lane. "A lot of people have run the elbow action, but no ones run it like him," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "He started doing it in Portland and then in Sac, everywhere hes gone hes won for the most part. Hes one of the better coaches that weve ever had in the league and a lot of people dont realize that. And I think thats too bad. But hes been good for the game. Hes brought a lot to the game." "Ive stolen from him, very honestly," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. Adelmans final season in Minnesota was a frustrating one, with Nikola Pekovic missing 28 games, Chase Budinger never fully healthy after off-season knee surgery and a team that beat the Thunder, Heat, Spurs, Grizzlies, Rockets and Pacers but also lost to the Kings, Magic and Jazz. Now the team heads into a precarious summer, with President Flip Saunders needing to find the right coach and make the right personnel moves to keep Love, who can opt out of his contract after next season. Michigan States Tom Izzo, a friend of Saunders for years, ESPN analyst George Karl and former Memphis coach Lionel Hollins are among the candidates likely to be considered to take over a team that has the longest-running playoff drought in the league at 10 years. Saunders himself could also take over, though owner Glen Taylor has said he prefers to keep Saunders in the front office. Saunders hinted Monday that a coach who has experience running the show is the preference. "Be demanding, hold players accountable, just like any good coach, everyone has the same formula what you are looking for," Saunders said. "We are more geared toward bringing someone who has a track record, whos had some success." Adelman said he had "a sour taste" with how this season finished, especially with a lacklustre effort in a season-ending home loss to the Jazz. Hes not sure what hes going to do with all his free time. Probably play a lot of golf, definitely spend Christmas at home with his family and just maybe -- "You never say never" -- listen to another coaching offer down the road. Adelman said a return is very unlikely, and it sounded believable when he was asked what it was going to feel like to wake up on Tuesday morning without the job to worry about. He smiled and his face brightened. "Its going to be good," he said. Mitch Wishnowsky Jersey . TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has taken on-field batting practice for the first time since his 2013 season was cut short by injuries. Jeter hit with authority to all fields during a five-round, 39-swing session Monday at the Yankees minor league complex. Jeter also took grounders at shortstop for the first time this year, fielding 34 balls at his usual position. "Everything is good so far, knock on wood," Jeter said. Jeter, who turns 40 in June, had hit in an indoor batting cage and fielded grounders on infield grass the previous two weeks. He was limited to 17 games last year after breaking an ankle during the 2012 playoffs. The Yankees captain is not worrying about those who doubt his ability to return from the severe injury. "My job is to be ready to play," Jeter said. "I remember when I was 35, everyone said that was it. He cant play anymore. End of my career. So, its really nothing different. Eventually, somebody is going to be right, you know what I mean? Youre going to run out of numbers." JJeter broke his left ankle during the 2012 AL championship series.dddddddddddd He played in just five spring training games last year and broke the ankle again in April during rehabilitation. "This off-season is like a normal off-season," said Jeter, who was in a walking boot until early January last year. "Im four months ahead of where I was last year. Last year, quite honestly, I want to forget about it." Jeter missed the first 91 games of the 2013 season, then felt pain his right quadriceps when he returned July 11. He went back on the DL, returned July 28 for three games, then strained his right calf. Back in the lineup on Aug. 26, he played through Sept. 7, when he left for a pinch runner after singling against Boston. Four days later the Yankees said his season was over. Jeter wound up hitting .190 (12 for 63) with one homer and seven RBIs. Yankees pitchers, catcher and injured players start workouts Feb. 15. Jeter said hell remain at the minor league complex until the first full-squad big league workout on Feb. 20. ' ' '

The Calgary Flames were hard-working team last season, but they werent overly skilled and had subpar goaltending. They made a move in free agency to address the latter concern. Numbers Game examines the Flames addition of Jonas Hiller. The Flames Get: G Jonas Hiller. Hiller, 32, has been an above average starting goaltender over the course of his career, posting a .916 save percentage, but the past three seasons have not been so kind, as Hillers .911 save percentage ranks 22nd out of 29 goaltenders to play at least 100 games in that span. Of those below Hiller on that list, Steve Mason and Ondrej Pavelec are the only ones set to be clear number ones with their teams going into next season. Hillers even-strength save percentage over that time, .922, is below average, at least among goaltenders that have played starters minutes. Being a below-average starter can still be an improvement for the Flames, but it should also manage expectations for Hiller, who was beaten out for playoff playing time in Anaheim, by rookies Frederik Andersen and John Gibson. Even so, in Calgary, Hiller will be battling Karri Ramo for playing time and Ramo had a .911 save percentage last season -- his first year in the NHL since 2008-2009 -- and owns a .902 save percentage in 88 career games. To his credit, Ramo came on after a slow start last season, posting a .918 save percentage in 30 games from December through the end of the season, so maybe he can compete with Hiller for playing time. Even if Hiller might not be great at this stage of his career, hes likely an upgrade on Ramo and thats what matters to the Flames. With Hiller and Ramo together, the Flames have a chance to get something close to league-average goaltending. That may not be enough to get them into playoff contention -- they ranked 26th in puck possession last season, after all -- but he makes the Flames better. Signed for $9-million over two seasons, Hiller is being paid like a starting goaltender, but the short term makes this a smart, low-risk move for the Flames. Price addressed the media at the teams practice facility in Brossard on Monday and said that the relief and satisfaction from winning Olympic gold will be short-lived. "The pressure is off for now." he said. "It will last until probably the next game." When asked about his teammate P.K. Subban dressing just once for Canada at the Olympics, Price commended the Norris Trophy winner for putting the team ahead of himself. "He definitely carried himself very well," he said. "He handled himself with the utmost proofessionalism.dddddddddddd" "It was a complete effort from everybody, no matter what position guys were put in," Price added. "Everybody contributed in some way and I think that was probably the most special feeling. Because everybody out on that ice when our anthem was played had a part in it in some way." Price did not participate in the Canadiens Monday practice and will also have Tuesday off.  Price said he does not know when hell return to the net for the Canadiens, but said Team Canada head coach Mike Babcock jokingly encouraged him to have "a few more beers" after the teams gold medal victory. FRANKFURT - Vitali Klitschko is leaving boxing to concentrate on Ukrainian politics and his role as an opposition leader, and that should give Canadian Bermane Stiverne a shot at becoming a world heavyweight champion. Klitschko vacated his WBC heavyweight title on Monday and said he doesnt expect to fight again as he pursues a presidential bid in his home country, where citizens have been protesting for weeks in Kyiv over President Viktor Yanukovychs decision to shun closer ties with the European Union and push his country toward Russia. The World Boxing Council proclaimed Klitschko a "Champion Emeritus," a move that would allow him to challenge the new champion directly should he wish to resume his career. "This offer makes it theoretically possible to return to the ring, which I cannot imagine at all happening as things stand now," Klitschko said in a statement. "I am now concentrating on the politics in Ukraine, I feel people need me there." Stiverne (23-1-1), a Haitian-born Montrealer based in Las Vegas, is the WBCs top-ranked contender and has been waiting for Klitschko to make a decision on his future. It is expected that Stiverne will face No. 2-ranked American Chris Arreola for the title. On April 27, Stiverne scored a convincing unanimous decision over Arreola in Ontario, Calif. to win the WBC Silver belt, an unofficial interim title. Stivernes Montreal-based manager Camille Estaphan hopes to meet with WBC officials Tuesday in Los Angeles to confirm a title bout between his fighter and Arreola, which he hopes will take place in March or April. Estaphan said Klitschkos retirement may also help Stiverne financially. "If we had fought Klitschko, the champion would get 70 per cent of the purse, while now, that will be in our favour," said Estaphan. "Were hoping theres a little present under the tree for us just before Christmas." Klitschko is a lawmaker and chairman of the opposition party Udar (Punch) and intends to run for president in 2015. Klitschko has taken an active part in the rallies, urging his countrymen to continue their fight to turn the ex-Soviet republic into a genuine Western democracy. "This is not a revolution. It is a peaceful protest that demands justice," Klitschko told The Associated Press in an interview earlier this month. "The people are not defending political interests. They are defending the idea of living in a civilized country." The 42-year-old Klitschko has a 45-2 record, with 41 KOs. His younger brother Wladimir holds the other significant heavyweight belts. "My brother Wladimir will be responsible for further sporting successes," the older Klitschko said Monday. Vitali has not fought since September 2012, when he made the 10th defence of his belt with a fourth-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Manuel Charr. In a game between both clubs just three weeks earlier, Avalanche forward Steve Moore laid a controversial hit on Vancouvers Markus Naslund, making contact with the Canuck captains head. Naslund suffered a concussion and missed three games, while Moore was unpenalized for the hit and the National Hockey League took no disciplinary action. And that set the table for a moment that sent shockwaves throughout the hockey world - and still resonates with the game today. With the Avalanche up 8-2 on the home team in the third period and the game well out of reach, Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi skated up behind Moore, grabbed the back of his sweater and delivered a round-house swing with his gloved right hand that struck Moore in the head. Moore then fell head first to the ice under the weight of Bertuzzi, who came down on top of him. Several other players jumped on the pile in an attempt to get Bertuzzi off of Moore. A pool of blood formed around Moores head as he lay motionless on the ice. A stretcher was wheeled out and after a delay of nearly 10 minutes, the 25-year-old was taken off for meedical attention.dddddddddddd. Moore was conscious and talking to medical staff when he left the ice on a stretcher and was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken neck and a concussion. Bertuzzi was given a 10-minute match penalty and, after the game, the NHL suspended him indefinitely pending a hearing. Video of the attack was shown on television screens across North America - on sports highlights shows, talk shows and national news. Two days after the incident, the NHL suspended Bertuzzi for the remainder of the season and playoffs while the Canucks was fined $250,000 by the NHL. Now, almost 10 years after Bertuzzis infamous hit, Moores multi-million-dollar lawsuit surrounding it is finally approaching a trial in September. In Tribulations And Trial - a three-part series starting tonight - SportsCentre looks back at the Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore incident and what lies ahead. The first part looks back at the incident itself and how everything unfolded up to that point. On Friday, SportsCentre has a one-on-one interview with Moore discussing whats happened since then. And on Saturday - 10 years to the day after the incident - TSN reporter Matthew Scianitti looks ahead at what to expect in Moores lawsuit. ' ' '

WINNIPEG -- Teenager Kadeisha Buchanan was a star on both sides of the ball Thursday night as Canada tied the No. 1-ranked U.S. womens soccer team 1-1, thanks to her first goal as a member of the Canadian national team. "The future is bright," said teammate Desiree Scott. "Kadeisha Buchanan, 18-year-old, going toe-to-toe with some of the best strikers in the world and she scores a goal tonight. Unbelievable performance." Buchanan said it was a great experience to score but her work on defence was also key to keeping the Americans in check. "Defence wins games and we tried," she said of the physical way she challenged and often beat U.S. strikers such as veteran Abby Wambach as they rushed the Canadian goal. "Thats part of my element." Coach John Herdman said Canadas young back line did a great job and Buchanan has what it takes to be the best in the world at her position. "Shes the (Christine) Sinclair of defenders, shes that good" he said, referring to Canadas top forward. Buchanan scored her goal with a header off a corner kick just before the 35-minute mark of the friendly, and for 40 minutes it looked like Canada might finally beat a team they last defeated in 2001. The 18-year-old Toronto native only made her debut with the national team in January 2013 but has seen 12 starts with Lauren Sesselmann out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Herdman said it was disappointing to come so close and not get the win but he liked what he saw of the Canadian teams development as they prepare for the 2015 Womens World Cup. American striker Sydney Leroux, who was born in Surrey, B.C., tied the game just before the 78-minute mark when she kicked Canadian defender Rebecca Quinns crossing header into the corner past goalkeeper Erin McLeod. It was the third consecutive game against Canada in which shes scored a goal. "She loves big moments and shes come through and shes been fantastic," said interim U.S. coach Jill Ellis. McLeod had to make one big save early in the game off Heather OReilly and another in the second half off a header by Wambach. Then the Canadian team had to block a free kick just past the 84-minute mark that could have put the Americans in the lead. American keeper Hope Solo had her bid to tie the U.S. shutout record foiled by Buchanan. The day before the game, Herdman said the crowd could play a role. "Were not going to have 700 shots and 700 crosses, so the fans have got to be ready to really get behind us when we need (them)," he said. The crowd of 28,255 didnt disappoint. The game was also blessed with cool but dry weather, after a forecast that threatened rain, and it was the second largest crowd ever to watch a womens friendly in Canada. "You could feel the energy," said Herdman, who suggested it was a taste of what Canada will offer when it hosts the Womens World Cup next summer. Solo, who also played for the U.S. in the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, is just one away from tying Briana Scurry for the most shutouts in the American programs history at 70. Melissa Tancredi, who rejoined the Canadian team for the first time since she returned to school a couple of years ago to finish her chiropractic studies, got some playing time late in the second half. The Winnipeg-born Scott said she was thrilled to play for the first time in front of friends and family as a member of the national team. This is her sixth year on Canadas squad. "It was exhilarating and exciting for me and it definitely drove me to give a great performance tonight," she said. Buchanan, meanwhile, is also a member of Canadas under-20 World Cup team. MIAMI -- Christian Yelich stepped to the plate 0 for 4 in the game and 0-since-the-minors when batting with a chance for a walkoff win. This time he came through. The Miami outfielder hit a two-out, bases-loaded RBI single in the ninth inning Thursday to give the Marlins a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Yelich said the walkoff hit was his first since Single-A. As a reward he was mobbed by his teammates after rounding first base. "You know youre probably going to get beat up a little bit out there, but its an awesome feeling," he said. "I got horse-collared for a second, but thats all right. Ill take it. Im glad I could win that one." The Marlins won despite squandering a 3-0 eighth-inning lead. They improved to 19-6 at home, best in majors, and have scored a game-ending run in four of their past six victories at Marlins Park. That gives them five walkoff wins this year, which is tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the most in the majors, according to STATS. "Nobody wants to play extra innings," manager Mike Redmond said. "We wanted to get that thing done with and go out and have a nice meal." Miamis Henderson Alvarez threw seven shutout innings, while Cole Hamels allowed three runs in seven innings. The Phillies lost two of three in the series and are 20-24 going into an 11-game homestand starting Friday. "Were so close for that sort of explosion to happen and for everything to come together," Hamels said. "Its a matter of time before it will happen, but I know personally it should happen soon." Philadelphias Marlon Byrd tied it in the eighth with a two-run homer, his sixth. Miamis Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run homer, giving him two homers and seven RBIs in the past two games, and he threw out a runner at third from centre field. Ozuna also started the ninth-inning rally. He singled with one out off Jake Diekman (2-2), then took second on a two-out single by Jeff Mathis. Pinch hitter Reid Johnson reached on an infield single that Diekman bobbled, sending Ozuna to third and bringing Yelich to the plate. "Im thinking, Dont leave me here," Ozuna said. "He did a good job." Yelich grounded a 1-1 fastball up the middle. "It was fitting to get Yellie up there at the end," Redmond said. "He has been in a couple of sits where he has had a chance to get a big hit and hasnt come up with one. I was sitting there thinking, This would be a perfect day for him to get a big hit, and sure enough he did." Marlins closer Steve Cishek (4-1) struck out two with a runner at second to end the ninth. The Phillies went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position, with Byrds homer the lone hit. With the Phillies trailing 1-0, manager Ryne Sandberg let Hamels bat for himself in the seventh. He then gave up a single and Ozunas eighth homer on an 0-2 pitch to start the bottom of the seventh. Ozuna had been batting .113 in May before his breakout in the past two games. "When he gets hot, hes as good as anybody," Redmond said. Jimmy Rollins singled in the third to take over sole possession of second place on the Phillies hit list with 2,218. TORONTO - For many, it would have already become an elephant in the room, an awkward matter best ignored. For Kyle Lowry, its become an accepted reality. He will be traded. The question is, when and where? The Raptors point guard is widely believed to be next on general manager Masai Ujiris chopping block after the first domino - Rudy Gay, Lowrys best friend - fell last week. On Thursday, multiple outlets - namely ESPN and Yahoo Sports - linked Lowry to trade discussion with a number of interested teams, including the Knicks and the Nets. A day later, as the Raptors got set to host the road-weary 76ers, the easy answer for Lowry would have been none at all. He could have brushed off the reports, spouted off cliches or dodged the media all together. But he did no such thing. "Honestly, I started hearing [the rumours] once I left here for practice [Thursday] and then it was crazy for, like, four hours," he said Friday morning. "At night, I turned my phone off and went to sleep. I wake up, if Im traded, Im traded and if not, Ill come to shootaround." "Everybody read everything yesterday, seen everything yesterday. To this point, Im still a Raptor and Im focused on tonight, playing against the 76ers." Moving Lowry, who was acquired by the previous regime prior to last season, has become a priority for Ujiri. Averaging 14.6 points and 6.7 assists through 20 games, Lowry - owed $6.2 million this year - will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and its clear he is not part of the Raptors long-term plans. Lowry has not been in contact with Ujiri regarding his future and doesnt plan to reach out. "If he trades me, then Ill talk to him," Lowry said. "Hes always been a GM thats been kind of in the background. Hes not in the forefront, he lets us play and thats how hes been this whole year." Although one report stated that hes wanted to be moved for most of the season, Lowry clarified that he has not asked the Raptors GM for a trade. "No, none whatsoever," said coach Dwane Casey, asked if Lowry has expressed a desire to be traded. "Thats the first Ive heard of that and Ive never heard of Kyle or sensed Kyle wanted to be traded at all. I have no knowledge of that." While the market for Gay was limited, leading to Sundays sudden seven-player deal with Sacramento, theres far more interest in Lowry and his affordable, expiring contract. With that in mind, Ujiri will not be rushed into moving his starting point guard. Lowry is a professional and has obvious motivation to continue playing hard, auditioning for his next contract, but his inevitable departure is an obvious distraction to him and the rest of the team. "Yeah of course, I mean no one can say it doesnt [weigh on them] but at the same time, you have to know that this is a business," he stated. "You have to know the situation you are in, the situation that youre going to be in. You cant let it affect you too much because you still have to go out here and do a job and try to win for the team youre playing for." He and his teammates are trying their best to approach the seemingly uncomfortable situation with a sense of humour. "We all read HoopsHype," he admitted with a smirk on his face. "You see it everyday, you see it whenever they update it and everyone talks about it. But we joke about it a little bit. We make it more of a lighter-type thing, dont make it a heavy-hearted thing, make it like a joke, like hey man, you still here?" For now and until Ujiri finds an offer he likes, Lowry remains a Raptor. He will continue to play and play hard, because its the right thing to do but mostly because its in his best interest. All the while, his eventual replacement and newly-acquired point guard Greivis Vasquez will back him up and even spend some time alongside him in the Raptors backcourt. The situation is what it is. It will be as awkward as the team allows it be, until - in the very near future - its dealt with, until speculation finally becomes reality. Until then, we wait and so does the team and its point guard. Greg Jennings Jersey . For the first time, the AP will present a separate award to the assistant coach voted to have done the best job in 2014.And there are plenty of candidates.Todd Bowles, Arizona defensive co-ordinatorAlready being looked at for upcoming head coaching vacancies, Bowles has worked wonders with an injury-ravaged unit. The Cardinals (11-3) stay in — or win — games more because of their defence and coaching than anything.Adam Gase, Denver offensive co-ordinator.Gases unit now has become as much run-oriented as Peyton Manning-oriented, and its working. Remember, this is the guy who got some wins out of Tim Tebow back in 2011.I think hes used the knowledge of the coaches that hes worked with, you know, the offensive coaches especially, and the Nick Sabans that have been instrumental in some of his coaching philosophies, Manning says. Hes used those to apply to his coaching style and its helped him a lot.Like Bowles, Gases name will come up in the January chase for head coaching positions, particularly for teams with a young QB in need of development.Teryl Austin, Detroit defensive co-ordinatorThe phrase Lions impressive defence is something new around the Motor City. Austin has it ranked second overall and first against the run in his first year on the job.Detroits secondary was expected to be a weak link, but it has yielded only 238 points. Austin has cultivated balance and gotten it.James Campen, Green Bay offensive lineWhen you have a prized quarterback such as Aaron Rodgers and a stud runner in Eddie Lacy, one thing that can neutralize them in Titletown is weak blocking. The Packers had been so-so on the offensive line for too long, but Campen has helped develop youngsters who could become anchors: tackle David Bakhtiari and rookie centre Corey Linsley.Rod Marinelli, Dallas defensive co-ordinator; Bill Callahan, Dallas offensive co-ordinator/offensive line; Scott Linehan, Dallas passing gameA three-pronged candidacy. The Cowboys dedication to DeMarco Murray, like Rodgers a leading contender for MVP, and the running game lifts both Callahan and Linehan into consideration. Callahan oversees perhaps the best line in the NFL, and Linehan has avoided the temptation to put a heavy burden on QB Tony Romo.ddddddddddddut the most eye-catching work in Big D has come from its, well, Big D. Expectations for the Cowboys defence couldnt have been lower entering 2014. Yet Marinelli has moulded an unheralded (some would say undertalented) group into a winner.Dan Quinn, Seattle defensive co-ordinatorThis one is simple: Seattles sometimes overpowering defence makes the Seahawks tough to derail. Its doing exactly what it needs to do for Seattle to repeat, despite personnel losses to injury and free agency.Dave Fipp, Philadelphia special teams co-ordinatorNo discounting the additions of Darren Sproles, Josh Huff, Chris Maragos, Cody Parkey and Bryan Braman, Fipp has done a strong job making his groupings, well, special. The Eagles have a huge edge on opponents in punt/kickoff returns and coverage, and have four runbacks for TDs.Todd Haley, Pittsburgh offensive co-ordinatorIf anyone said Pittsburgh leads the league in something, the natural instinct for the home of the Steel Curtain would be to think defence. Nope. Haley has helped Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and LeVeon Bell into position to set franchise marks.Gary Kubiak, Baltimore offensive co-ordinatorRay Rice, suspended. Barnard Pierce, hurt and then ineffective. So Kubiak turned to journeyman Justin Forsett, and Forsett is among the league leaders in rushing. The O-line has been outstanding, allowing only 16 sacks. The biggest thing with Gary is the confidence he gives the unit, QB Joe Flacco says. I think Gary does a great job of doing that and seeing what theyre giving us out there and making adjustments and making calls on the fly.Jim Schwartz, Buffalo defensive co-ordinator; Pepper Johnson, Buffalo defensive lineSchwartz might have flopped as a head man in Detroit, but hes rediscovered his tough defensive mastery here. No better evidence than the 21-13 win over the high-powered Packers last Sunday. His biggest helper has been Johnson, who took over a topnotch unit and has made it even better.Bill Kollar, Houston defensive lineSure, J.J. Watt, another leading MVP contender, would make any coach look good. Listen to what Watt has to say about his mentor:Every single day is something new with him. Im always learning and Im always improving as a player. I owe a lot of my credit to him.Such an endorsement might make Kollar award worthy. The NHLs Mar. 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to buy or sell while figuring out which players can make the biggest difference and hold the greatest value. Check out todays trade-related reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. And follow TSN.ca through Deadline Day for all the updates. Vets for Sale? Toiling in the Western Conference cellar, are the Edmonton Oilers ready to start moving some pieces out for future assets? According to TSNs hockey insiders, the Oilers could be willing to part with more than just the widely-rumoured-to-be-available Sam Gagner. Darren Dreger floated the names of veteran forwards Ales Hemsky and Ryan Smyth as both being available prior to the deadline. Smyth and Hemsky are both set to hit unrestricted free agency following the 2013-14 season, carrying cap hits of $2.25 million and $5 million, respectively. Are You Jellin? The Bruins defence corps may be without Dennis Seidenberg after season-ending knee surgery, but the Bs dont appear to be in a hurry to add a veteran to their young blue line behind captain Zdeno Chara. According to the Boston Herald General manager Peter Chiarelli is ready to be patient with his blue line before exploring the trade market for a veteran d-man. Moulson Canadian? The possibility of Matt Moulson finding a new home before Mar. 5 has been rumoured since the Buffalo Sabres acquired the pending-free agent in a deal with the New York Islanders on Oct. 27. But TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun believes the Ottawa Senators could be a suitor for Moulson if they are able to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff chase. LeBrun points to the working (and familial) relationship between Senators general manager Bryan Murray and new Sabres GM Tim Murray (Bryans nephew) as a good starting ground for discussions. The Sabres have already acquired three additional draft picks in the first two rounds of Junes NHL Draft, with one of those being a conditional first from the trade that brought Moulson to Buffalo. The Senators traded away their 2014 first round pick in the deal that landed them Bobby Ryan from the Anaheim Ducks. Billy Cundiff Jersey . Browns advice worked. A Wednesday evening, home in London watching the TV with huge anticipation for the annual showpiece event of the Euro soccer calendar - the 1985 European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus. The 1984 Italian Champions team included Paolo Rossi, the striker who singlehandedly slayed the might of Brazil when scoring a hat trick against them in the quarterfinals of the 1982 World Cup. Rossi wasnt even the star player. That was Michel Platini, the current UEFA President. Italys Brazil 2014 manager, Cesare Prandelli was on the bench. The 39 innocent supporters were killed in cold blood as they attempted to flee from the onslaught of hooliganism initiated by so called fans of Liverpool. It occurred on the terrace behind the goal where Juventus supporters were in the majority. A wall which prevented the Juventus supporters from escaping collapsed with devastating consequences an hour before the game had been scheduled to kick off. Thirty-eight died instantly, a 39th victim succumbing in hospital three months later. Thirty-two were Italians, four Belgian and two French nationals, even a supporter from Northern Ireland. Reports at the time stated over 600 fans were treated for injuries they suffered. The victims came from a whole cross section of society. Included a couple of mailmen, a pair of chefs, three doctors, several students and store workers, a car mechanic, a soldier, a school boy, a farmer, a fashion photographer , a construction worker, a taxi driver and a school janitor. The youngest of whom was only 11-years old. The Heysel Tragedy. One of soccers darkest moments. In the aftermath, UEFA deemed it acceptable for the match to go ahead. Their reasoning concluded it was in the public safety to do so. Cancelling the match they believed would have led to further mayhem. For the record, courtesy of a second half Michel Platini penalty, Juventus won its first European title. The subsequent investigation into the Heysel Tragedy brought no comfort to the grieving families. The stadium was ill equipped to deal with such an occasion. In the weeks leading up to the final Juventus and Liverpool complained to UEFA, stating their concerns for the stadium. Crumbling infrastructure, inadequate policing and security were key factors in preventing such a tragedy. All that separated the Liverpool and Juventus supporters on that fateful terrace was a chicken wire. Criminal charges werre made.dddddddddddd Convictions for involuntary manslaughter were bought against 14 Liverpool fans in a court case that took over four-years to bring. They served very little jail time. Civil charges against those resulted in a scant award of $7 million to the victims families. The Belgian Football Union was put in the dock too. The BFUs most senior official given a suspended prison sentence for "Regrettable Negligence." UEFA itself was not immune - their president and another senior official receiving conditional discharges. Two days after the tragedy and under severe pressure from Margaret Thatchers government, the English Football Association announced it was banning its clubs from playing in Europe. Within a week, UEFA announced that with immediate effect they were banning English clubs indefinitely. It would be five years before they would be permitted to enter European competitions. Additionally Liverpool were banned for a further three-years but 12 months later that ban was lifted. In a highly moving pre-match ceremony on the pitch before their April 27th match against Chelsea, Liverpool recognized the 25th Anniversary of Hillsborough.  Brendan Rodgers led the tributes. Yesterday the club placed a floral tribute beneath the Heysel Memorial Plaque which adorns the Centenary Stand at Anfield. Juventus marked the anniversary late last month in a ceremony at their memorial site for the victims. Yesterday a poignant statement was posted on the clubs website - Heysel, the Day of Silence. Hillsborough has always remained in the public consciousness. Heysel however has not. Look at UEFAs website today and you wouldnt even know such an inhumane tragedy occurred at their showpiece club event. If anything positive came out of Heysel, it was that it signified the beginning of the end of wide scale rioting and hooliganism that had wrought havoc across the English game in the preceding decade. That is not to suggest that today the so termed "English Disease" has been completely eradicated. As millions of supporters begin  gathering in the 12 host cities staging this summers World Cup, they do so against a backdrop which  includes construction worker fatalities and anti-World Cup protests similar to those which occurred at last summers Confederations Cup where an estimated 1,000,000 Brazilians took to the streets. Come July 13th when the world gathers around its TV sets for the World Cup Final let us hope during these upcoming weeks the world doesnt lay witness to 1 more death in the `name of football. ' ' '
