MONTREAL - The gloom of starting the season with three straight defeats hasnt descended on the Montreal Impact just yet. The players and their new, as-yet winless coach Frank Klopas, were upbeat this week as they prepared to face the Union on Saturday in Philadelphia. "The effort and intensity have been very good," said Klopas. "Everybodys shown theyre ready to play. Those setbacks will go away if we keep working like we have been." There is reason for optimism, starting with the return of star forward Marco Di Vaio and midfielder Andres Romero from the three-game suspensions they incurred from a scuffle at the end of their playoff game in October in Houston. The 38-year-old Di Vaio, a 20-goal scorer last season, may help them end a goalless string that has reached 205 minutes after being shut out in their last two matches. "Hes a competitive person, but its for the right reasons — for the group," Klopas said of Di Vaio. "His ability to create, and wanting ball in difficult moments, and to score goals... dont mean anything to him unless it helps the team win." Di Vaio is likely to step in for Andrew Wenger, who had a goal in a season-opening 3-2 loss in Dallas while filling in as the lone forward. It was not clear if Romero would start in his usual left midfield position or be available off the bench. There were also reports this week that the club is close to signing a third designated player to go with the Italian Di Vaio and Argentine midfielder Hernan Bernarello. Ignacio Piatti, an attacking midfielder who usually plays on the left wing, is believed ready to ink a deal that would see him join the Impact in June from the San Lorenzo club in Argentina. The team that opened camp with no significant signings, despite a late season plummet from first to fifth place last season, looks ready to make some changes. They also added fullback Heath Pearce during camp. A former Major League Soccer all-star with the New York Red Bulls who is coming off hip surgery, Pearce saw his first game action off the bench in a 2-0 loss at home last week to the Seattle Sounders. "I feel healthy and fit," the 29-year-old Pearce said. "Its been a long process. I feel young again." It was uncertain if he will start at left back, where the teams first round pick in this years draft, Eric Miller, has been impressive. Pearce likes how the Impact have not hung their heads despite the losses. The team started the 2013 campaign with four straight wins. "I dont think theres cause for alarm right now based on our results," he said. "Ive been in situations before where seasons didnt start well and Ive see a complete change in attitude and things get really dark and negative, but here its been upbeat." Defence has been an issue as Montreal has conceded six goals while scoring only twice. They have been lively on attack, leading the league with 57 shot attempts and 20 on target, but aging centreback Matteo Ferrari and converted fullback Hassoun Camera have been overwhelmed at times on counterattacks and set pieces. The Impact are missing centre back Adrian Lopez, who is due to resume practising soon after knee surgery, and the oft-injured Nelson Rivas. They hope to fix their defensive problems against Philadelphia. Montreal is 3-1-1 with 10 goals against the Union scored since joining MLS in 2012. The Union (1-1-1), coming off a 2-1 loss in Columbus, made major off-season changes including the addition of American midfielder Maurice Edu and midfielders Vincent Noguiera and Cristian Maidana. But they also have injury issues on defence, with converted forward Aaron Wheeler now playing in the middle. Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins said the Union are a puzzle. "With the players they have, especially the new players theyve added, you dont know what youll get," he said. "You dont know if theyll be a high press team or if theyll sit back and counter or if theyll try to play possession. "So you just have to go in and play your game and make them adapt to you." The Impact start the season with three of four games on the road, but after Philadelphia they will be back at Olympic Stadium for their next two against New York and Chicago. Note _ The Impact have loaned 20-year-old midfielder Zakaria Messoudi to the Ottawa Fury of the NASL. The former Canada u20 player is a product of the Impacts academy. Billy Turner Super Bowl Jersey . The United States clinched the final berth into the Ford Worlds, March 28-April 6 at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, on Saturday in Blaine, Minn. Mason Crosby Super Bowl Jersey . Louis still looking for a way out of Tampa Bay, the 38-year-old NHL veteran isnt showing his cards. http://www.packersonlineteamstore.com/ge...ersey.html . Nick Young scored 17 points for Los Angeles, which lost five of its last seven before trouncing the Pelicans, who beat them handily last week in New Orleans. Jodie Meeks and Xavier Henry scored 15 points apiece for the Lakers, who led by 20 points in the first half before coasting to their 12th win in their last 13 regular-season meetings with New Orleans. Jaire Alexander Super Bowl Jersey . Adding playoff teams. Monitoring instant replay from league headquarters. Possibly creating a set of guidelines to prevent locker-room bullying. Brett Favre Super Bowl Jersey . Grilli hasnt pitched since straining his left oblique in late April. Manager Clint Hurdle says the right-hander will make a couple of appearances in middle relief before the team determines whether to return Grilli to the back end of the bullpen.TORONTO - Cory Greenwood has a lot of catching up to do with the Toronto Argonauts. The Argos came to terms with the Canadian linebacker Tuesday, more than four years after taking him in the CFL draft. Toronto originally selected the Kingston, Ont., native third overall in 2010 but shortly afterwards he signed as a free agent with the NFLs Kansas City Chiefs. The six-foot-two, 235-pound Greenwood played three seasons with Kansas City, then joined the Detroit Lions, spending all of last season on injured reserve before being released.Just sitting through the meetings, its a different language, Greenwood said following his first practice with the Argos. Ive got so much to catch up on before Sunday, Im excited though. The Argos (7-9) visit the Montreal Alouettes (8-8) on Sunday afternoon in a key East Division contest as the winner will clinch a playoff berth.I dont know in what capacity theyre going to have me play . . . whatever my role is going to be Im just going to play, Greenwood said of Sundays game. I just need to get into the playbook and sink my teeth into it and justt learn that.ddddddddddddts a tight race. I just want to come in here and do whatever I can do to help.Greenwood, 29, played 48 games with Kansas City, registering 35 tackles, primarily on special teams. The six-foot-two 235-pound Greenwood captured the Presidents Trophy in 09 as Canadian university footballs top defensive player. The NFL stands for Not For Long, so even my first year I had no idea I was going to make the team, he said. You really have no idea when your time is going to expire down there.I feel like I was blessed to be able to play there, I learned a lot as far as techniques and stuff about the game that hopefully I can bring here and help this team win.Toronto also released defensive back Harold Mutabola from its practice roster.Cory was a top prospect when we drafted him in the first round in 2010 out of Concordia University, Argos GM Jim Barker said in a statement. He has since spent three years as a professional football player and we are excited to see the type of player he has become and how he will be able to contribute to our team. ' ' '

The New York Rangers have a mix of proven veterans and interesting young players and it will be interesting to see how they are deployed under a new coach, Alain Vigneault, who has established his tendency to start his best scorers more frequently in the offensive zone. Top Picks: There are no sure things when it comes to goaltending, with fluctuations from year to year in many cases, but Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist is pretty close to being a safe selection. Over the last four seasons, Lundqvist has a .924 save percentage and the only goaltender to play at least 25 games and record a save percentage over .920 in all four years. RW Rick Nash can take some heat for his playoff performance, when he scored one goal and five points in 12 games, but his 0.95 points per game during the regular season was his second-best in the last seven years and was a career-best plus-16 in 44 games. Since 2003-2004, Nash has scored 293 goals, ranking fifth, and hes still just 29-years-old, so he fits as a top-five right winger, likely going in the first couple rounds of most drafts. Coming off a breakout season, in which he scored 44 points in 48 games, C Derek Stepan is still looking for a new contract, but presuming that he gets into the Rangers lineup, the 23-year-old has to be considered a valuable fantasy commodity. In the last three seasons, Stepan is one of 15 forwards to have 140 points and a plus-40 rating and hes just hitting his prime. Captain Ryan Callahan has scored 109 goals over the last five seasons, ranking 46th, and is perennially among the league leaders in hits, but hes also recovering from off-season shoulder surgery and is not expected to be ready for the start of the season. In three seasons (well, 169 games) D Ryan McDonagh is one of five defencemen to have at least 50 points and a plus-50 rating. Even if hes not a huge scorer, as a No. 3 fantasy defencemen, hes a fine option. With a little more offence to his game, D Michael Del Zotto has 62 points over the last two seasons, ranking 21st among defencemen. Again, as a No. 3 defenceman, he offers good value. Value Plays: Much-maligned for his playoff performance, when he was a healthy scratch with the Rangers season on the line, C Brad Richards is looking for a fresh start with a new coach and while the 33-year-old isnt likely to return to point-per-game scoring, he can do better than the career-low 0.74 points per game he had last season. As a high-end No. 3 centre, Richards could be a savvy pick. LW Carl Hagelin has been an effective complementary scorer in his first two NHL seasons, scoring 62 points in 112 games but, like Callahan, hes recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and isnt expected to be ready for the start of the season. However, once hes healthy, Hagelin is a good bet to have a spot in the top six. The Rangers have a couple more defencemen that can provide value, in large part because they play so much. Dan Girardi has topped out at 31 points in a season, yet hes a valuable blueliner in leagues that count hits and blocked shots since hes recorded 686 hits and 726 blocks over the last four seasons. Marc Staals career-high is 29 points and hes coming off a serious eye injury, but if hes playing 24 minutes a night, as he was before getting hurt, he could be productive enough to have fantasy value. Sleepers/Breakthrough: After arriving in New York last season, as part of the return for Marian Gaborik, Derick Brassard scored 23 points in 25 (regular season plus playoff) games, a decided improvement on several seasons of disappointing production in Columbus. If he gets utilized with offensive linemates -- not easy with Stepan and Richards on the depth chart -- Brassard could push for a career-best season. LW Mats Zuccarello returned to the Rangers following a season in the KHL, tallying 15 points in 27 (regular season plus playoff) games. With Hagelin out to start the year, that could be the opening that Zuccarello needs to secure a spot on a scoring line right from the start.   Rookies: LW Chris Kreider is full of potential, even if his 2012-2013 season was a bit of a bust with 23 points in 48 AHL games and three points in 23 games with the Rangers. Kreider will have a new opportunity to earn more playing time and if he uses his size and speed, he could be a productive complementary winger. The Rangers also have Swedish forwards Oscar Lindberg and Jesper Fasth and Danny Kristo, acquired from Montreal, as prospects that could earn their way into a regular spot in the lineup, but they wont have value until they arrive. The Pope greeted Klose at his general audience Wednesday and the pair had a long chat. Klose is German like the pope, although he was born in Poland. In Sundays derby, Lazio took the lead in the seventh minute after Maarten Stekelenburg brought down Klose, resulting in the Roma goalkeeper being sent off and a penalty that Hernanes converted. Chad Henne Jersey . Howard hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. http://www.prochiefsauthentic.com/Youth-...te-Jersey/ .J. - The New York Jets have signed former Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Graham Harrell, giving them some added depth at the position. Juan Thornhill Jersey . scored 18 of his career- high 28 points in the first half, as fifth-ranked Ohio State dominated No. Damien Williams Jersey . The 30-year-old Moore played in 13 games for the Saints last season, catching 37 balls for 457 yards and two touchdowns.HOUSTON - It was a long night at the office for the Raptors, who went home empty handed Monday night. It was long, it was ugly and it ended in disappointment. It was not the first time theyve endured such a night. "[There are] no moral victories in this league," Kyle Lowry said, as if he had been practicing the cliche that has become more of a slogan for this team over the years. Its the second time hes used it in 10 days. And hes absolutely right. The Raptors played 58 minutes of basketball, at least 40 of which were hard fought, in a game that elapsed three hours and 17 minutes. They clawed back from 17 down after an atrocious second quarter, overcame injuries and foul trouble while hanging in with a more talented team on the road.  Ultimately, a loss is a loss. Toronto now has five of them in eight games. The question is, what can they learn from this one? "I am proud of the way they fought and scrapped and got back in the game," Dwane Casey said after his teams 110-104 double-overtime defeat at the hands of the Houston Rockets. "They could have laid down two or three times and they didnt." "Theres no moral victories in this game but, I see our team growing, fighting through things. Its a totally different feel from last year." Their resiliency was notable. Torontos 87-86 lead, following an Amir Johnson put-back with 40 seconds remaining, was its first since early in the opening frame. They scored just 13 points and shot an abysmal 18 per cent in the second. The defensive effort was equally as impressive, holding the Rockets to 44 per cent and neutralizing Dwight Howard and James Harden - for most of the game - as well as you can hope to. Offensively, they were treading water at the best of times. "We had so many opportunities to score," Casey said, "but we have to convert them." They didnt, not often enough to win. In fact, they were fortunate to come so close. Rudy Gay made just 11 of his career-high and franchise-most 37 field goal attempts, while DeMar DeRozan hit just six of 25. Together the pair shot 27 per cent on 62 attempts. Overall the team registered just 10 assists, a season low despite the extra time, on 38 made field goals. "We cant let us not making shots get us frustrated at all," said DeRozan, who had 22 points, second to Gays team-leading 29. "Were going to make shots, theyre going to come but we know we can stay in games with our defence and thats what we did." Those two missed a handful of jumpers they generally tend to hit with some consistency, as they pointed out, but poor shot selection continues to plague the Raptors high-volume duo early in the season. Both players are shooting below 37 per cent through eight games and DeRozan is now 18-for-70 (26 per centt) over his last four.dddddddddddd "We being the go-to players on this team, we have to [keep shooting]," DeRozan maintained. "We cant get frustrated if the shots not going. It would be a whole different story if we didnt take the shots, if we were out there being passive and not taking the shots we normally take." "It sucks that were missing a lot of easy shots but were going to continue to fight it out no matter what. We could be out there playing with a bowling ball and were going to continue to shoot it." Gay drew most of the ire from fans for his 37 attempts. With 34 seconds remaining in regulation - knotted up at 87 - Gay, isolated on the wing, winded down the shot clock and launched a 22-footer that clanked off the side of the rim. "We prefer for him to go to the basket," Casey said of that specific play. "Thats what we wanted, to attack the rim. I dont know if it was fatigue or good defence but the play was drawn for him to attack the rim." Fast forward, down three in overtime, Gay knocked down the triple that bought the Raptors an extra five minutes. The true Rudy Gay experience. You take the good with the bad. On this particular night, there was far more of the latter. "Were fighting," Lowry said. "Thats all we can do is keep fighting. Like I said, no moral victories in this league, none of that."  "But as long as we fight and play as hard as we can possibly play and do the things we know how to do the basketball gods will help us out a little bit. Well win some games like this." Aches and pains Lowry sat in the locker room after the game, both feet soaking in buckets of ice water. The Raptors point guard sustained a sprained right ankle in Saturdays lopsided win over Utah but said he never had any doubt about playing against his former team in Houston.  He struggled early, going 2-of-8 from the floor through three quarters but helped ignite Torontos run in the fourth. Lowry shot 4-for-8 and scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime periods before eventually fouling out. "Guys are tired," he said after the game. "But guys are spirited, guys are still up. Were not going to put our heads down, were going to learn from the game and weve got another tough test on Wednesday." The point guard admitted his ankle was sore after playing 47 minutes but doesnt plan to miss any time, with another former team on deck in the Grizzlies. Gay was also icing down a sore ankle that he tweaked during the game. Up next Gay will make his first return to Memphis following last seasons three-team trade when the Raptors visit the Grizzlies Wednesday night.  Catch it live on TSN 1050 Radio beginning at 8:00pm et. Bailey, a 12-time Pro Bowler, is one of the biggest names left on the market, but has seen his play decline in recent years. The grudge match between Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva and Chael "The American Gangster" Sonnen has been moved to Brazil, the UFC announced Thursday. "The highly-anticipated showdown between The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 coaches Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva has a new date and home, as UFC president Dana White announced Thursday that the light heavyweight bout will now headline a show in Brazil on May 31," a post on the organizations website said. A fight between the light-heavyweight rivals was originally slated as the co-main event at UFC 173 in Las Vegas on May 24 behind the middleweight championship bout between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort. The UFC says a city and venue will be announced shortly. Randy Coffield Jersey Retro . The 21-year-old, obtained Apr. 4 in a trade with the Philadelphia Union, headed in a goal just before halftime and surprised himself with a blind shot in off a post in the second half as the Impact downed the slumping Houston Dynamo 3-0. Marco Di Vaio added a late goal as the Impact (3-7-5) followed up a strong 0-0 draw in Vancouver on Wednesday with a win that gave them points in consecutive games for the time since April. After a horrendous start to the season, the Impact are 2-1-1 in its last four. Three of their next four games are on the road, where Montreal has yet to win this season, starting Saturday at Chivas USA in California. "It was important after the (World Cup) break to get a point in Vancouver and important to have consistency and follow that with a good result," said Klopas. "We have to build on this." The Dynamo (5-10-2) have been outscored 13-0 while losing five games in a row. Houston had Honduran midfielder Boniek Garcia back from the World Cup in Brazil but is still missing U.S. international Brad Davis. It was a prime chance for Montreal to get a much-needed points. While the Impact controlled most of the match and outshot Houston 17-8, it took McInerneys soft touch around the net to bag the three points. The striker known as Jack Mac has been everything the Impact hoped for when they sent 2012 first overall draft pick Andrew Wenger to Philadelphia. McInerney has six goals in eight MLS matches since joining the Impact (he had one for the Union before the trade), and added three more in Voyageurs Cup play. "Hes a pure striker," said Klopas. "He might not do anything or he might not be involved in the buildup, but then boom. One opportunity. "Its been good for him here working with Marco. The runs he makes are very similar." Added McInerney: "Its the way Ive always been. I dont do anything for 89 minutes and I get one chance and I usually put it away." He got his first of the night in the 42nd minute as he broke toward the goal and headed a pass from fullback Eric Miller past goalie Tally Hall. Then he added an impressive one in the 75th, putting the ball in off a post on a bicycle kick with his back to the net, after Justin Mapp beat a defender and lobbed a pass in front. "I got a little lucky," said McInerney. "Just make solid contact and whatever happens." The smile of disbelief on Di Vaios face afterward showed even the former Bolgna striker was impressed. "(Di Vaio) didnt say anytthing, but someone told me he was screaming at me to leave it," said McInerney.dddddddddddd "But I dont think he can be too mad at me." The Impact hope their season is turning around. With the win, Montreal improved from last in the eastern conference, and are now tied for ninth with the Chicago Fire with 14 points. The Impact got centreback Matteo Ferrari back earlier in the week and both Di Vaio and Mapp returned from injuries for the Houston game. Both started on the bench and came on in the second half. "Its good moving forward," said Mapp. "The first part of the season didnt go the way we wanted, obviously, but if you can put two or three wins together, youre right back in the mix. It gives us confidence going forward." Captain Patrice Bernier said McInerneys second goal may be a sign that balls that wouldnt go in earlier in the campaign are now starting to find the net. A tap-in goal for Di Vaio after Hall only got a hand on Andres Romeros shot was also a plus. It was only the second in an injury-plagued season for the striker who had 20 goals in 2013. There was silence in the Houston locker room. The Dynamo have not scored in a league game since May 17, a club record span of 479 minutes. That nearly ended 30 minutes in when Omar Cummings volley of a long pass from Giles Barnes struck the post. Instead, the Impact and goalie Troy Perkins got consecutive clean sheets for the first time since last August. "Its the way things are going," said Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear, who was in no mood to talk after the defeat. Asked what his team needs to do to get out of its slump, he said: "Win a game. It gives you confidence." Saputo Stadium has been a tough place for Houston the last two seasons. In 2013, they were outscored 7-0 in a pair of losses in Montreal. The Dynamo do much of the same when Montreal visits Houston, including a 1-0 win there earlier this season. The stadium was mostly quiet through the first half as a group of their main supporters protested the expulsion of some members at the teams last home game for lighting flares. Notes: Miller made his first start since April 19 for Montreal in place of Karl Ouimette, while Felipe returned to take the injured Issey Nakajima-Farrans (hamstring) spot in midfield. Felipe missed a game while his wife had a baby. . . Di Vaio and Mapp returned from injury and both went on in the second half. . . Dynamo forward Will Bruin and defender Corey Ashe were back after missing a U.S. Open Cup match with injuries, while Ricardo Clark and Brian Ownby, both returning from concussions, were on the bench. Ownby replaced Cummings in the 58th minute. ' ' '

MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact have come to terms with Spanish midfielder Gorka Larrea. The 30-year-old Larrea played 22 games in Spains La Liga with Real Sociedad from 2003 to 2006 and Levante UD in 2010. He also played more than 100 games in Spanish second division with Real Sociedad, UD Almeria, Levante UD and CD Numancia. The central midfielder has also appeared in several Copa del Rey games over his career. On the international scene, Larrea represented Spain at various youth levels, making 15 appearances from the U16 to U23 levels. Sky Sports Spanish football experts Guillem Balague and Terry Gibson feel the Barcelona squad needs freshening up sooner rather than later. The Catalan side scraped past Real Betis over the weekend to remain top of La Liga with two games to play but are level on points with Atletico Madrid with Real one point adrift.Manager Luis Enrique has come under a lot of criticism for his teams poor form that saw them blow a 10 point lead in the league and crash out of the Champions League. Speaking on the La Liga Weekly Podcast, Balague feels the squad is in need of freshening up if they are to maintain their dominance of Spain and Europe over the next few years. Its been a while since Barcelona produced their own players such as Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Carles Puyol. Terry Gibson The problems of Barcelona seem to be physical first of all but it goes beyond the physical, Balague said. Why doesnt he trust the people on the bench? Who bought those players? Are Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal his choices? Its something that could carry on to next season. Barcelona just feel its a team in need of fresh blood. Watch how Lionel Messi helped Barcelona beat Real Betis on Saturday Gibson is also concerned about how the famous La Masia academy has dried up producing players that are good enough to play in the Nou Camp. The production line of the young players developing and given their chance in the first team isnt there as much, Gibson insists. Sergi Roberto and Rafinha are probably the only two. Luis Enrique could see his job in question if Barcelona do not win La Liga Its been a while since Barcelona produced their own players such as Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Carles Puyol. There are lots of Barcelona youngsters dotted around the place performing well at other clubs. Its still questionable whether they would be good enough for Barcelona but it is an issue they are going to have to address. This group of players can go again next season - they are not past it yet - but it does need to keep an eye on in the long term. Could their be a summer clear out at the Nou Camp? However, Gibson insists Enrique may not even be around in the summer to undertake the revamp, especially if Barcelona bottle the chance to win La Liga and the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla.A month ago they were in the running for everything, Gibson said. They were big favourites to win the league, they were big favourites to win the Champions League and the Copa del Rey final is still to come.It will be interesting to see how he is judged. They could still win the Copa del Rey and will finish in the top three in La Liga and if they throw it away in those circumstances - but that is the pressure of being the Barcelona manager. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The handshakes and backslaps exchanged in the Miami Dolphins locker room late Sunday afternoon were gestures of consolation, not celebration, before players quietly slipped out the back door at the end of another disappointing season. Miami was eliminated from the scramble for the AFCs final wild-card berth by the New York Jets, who thrived in the role of spoilers against their archrivals and won 20-7. The Dolphins blew an early lead to complete a December collapse that will keep them out of the playoffs for a fifth straight year. "Its definitely going to take a little while to get over this one," quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. New Yorks Geno Smith led three long scoring drives, ran for a touchdown and threw for 190 yards, while two interceptions by rookie Dee Milliner and one by 35-year-old Ed Reed prevented a Miami comeback. The Dolphins (8-8) squandered a shot at their first post-season berth since 2008 by losing the final two games to non-playoff teams, including a shutout defeat at last-place Buffalo. It was a dismal end to a roller-coaster season that included a four-game losing streak, a bullying scandal that drew national scrutiny, and a December surge that briefly left the Dolphins in control of their playoff destiny -- but turned out to be a tease. "Our record is 8-8, and thats the definition of average," cornerback Brent Grimes said. "We felt like we could be a much better than average team, so were disappointed. We messed up in the last two games. Weve just got to live with that." The Dolphins were outscored 39-7 in those final two games. Now owner Stephen Ross must decide whether to shake up a regime led by second-year coach Joe Philbin and sixth-year general manager Jeff Ireland. "You have to earn your way into the playoffs. Clearly we didnt do that," Philbin said. "The results start with me. The head coach is responsible for the results. The offence, the defence, the special teams, the record -- it starts with me. Lets not stand here and blame the players." The Jets (8-8) celebrated as though theyre playoff-bound but will sit out the post-season for the third year in a row. After the game, owner Woody Johnson announced that coach Rex Ryan would return for a sixth season in 2014. Ryan, whose future had been in question, said Johnson gave him the news before the game. When players were told afterward, they cheered in the locker room. "Ill say this -- I love being the head coach of the New York Jets, plain and simple,&quoot; Ryan said.dddddddddddd "You put everything youve got into it. I never wanted to go out this way. Weve missed the playoffs three straight years, and that bothers me, no question." The Jets made sure they were joined on the post-season sideline by Miami. The only points of the seasons final two weeks for the Dolphins put them ahead 7-0 in the second quarter, but the Jets rallied by mounting touchdown drives of 71 and 80 yards on their final possessions of the first half. When Smith scored on a 7-yard, third-down keeper up the middle with 3 seconds left for a 14-7 lead at halftime, an excited Ryan ran on the field to celebrate with his players. Fans were booing in the first half and streaming for the exits in the final minutes. Smith drove the Jets 63 yards to set up a field goal that gave them a 17-7 cushion with 4:18 left, and on the next play Reed grabbed a deflected pass for his 64th career interception to all but seal the victory. Milliner stopped a Miami threat in the third quarter with a diving interception of Tannehill one play after Mike Wallace dropped a potential touchdown pass that would have tied the game. The Jets played like a team with nothing to lose, which they were, and eager to spoil Miamis season. They kept the Dolphins off balance with swarming defence and imaginative play-calling, including 294-pound defensive lineman Sheldon Richardsons 1-yard plunge for his second rushing touchdown this season. Running back Bilal Powell threw a 30-yard completion to set up the Jets field goal. Dolphins receiver Brian Hartline left the game in the first quarter with a left knee injury, while Wallace and Tannehill found it difficult to click all day. Tannehill overthrew an open Wallace deep, and Wallace slipped and fell on Milliners first interception. They did combine for a 5-yard touchdown to cap an 89-yard drive. But the Dolphins running game sputtered, as usual, and Tannehill finished with a woeful passer rating of 42.1. "It cant get worse than this," Wallace said. "We let them win. We let them dominate the game. We knew what we had on the line, and we didnt come up with the plays we needed." Notes: Hartline limped out of the game after a 25-yard reception that put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the second year in a row. ... Jets reserve CB Kyle Wilson left in the first half with a knee injury and didnt return. ... Before the game, former LB-DE Kim Bokamper, WR O.J. McDuffie, RB Mercury Morris and G Keith Sims were inducted into the Dolphins Walk of Fame. ' ' '

Ask anybody from the hardcore mixed martial arts fan to the guy on the corner barstool. Theyll all tell you its just about the coolest thing theyve ever seen in a cage. In the waning minutes of a title fight nearly three years ago, Anthony Pettis put his right foot on the fence, launched himself airborne and kicked Benson Henderson in the face, toppling him onto the canvas. In one sublime motion, Pettis lived every gravity-defying kinetic fantasy of every kid raised on video games, parkour and Jackie Chan movies -- and he won a championship belt, too. For the first time since Pettis landed whats now known as the Showtime Kick, hell be back in the cage with Henderson on Saturday night at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee at UFC 164. Both fighters realize their careers have been partly defined by that single moment of acrobatics, but neither fighter is thinking much about the past before a key bout for both mens futures. "Im not going to live off of it," Pettis said. "It happened. Were past it. Ive got to fight him again, and hes the champ. So even with that kick, Im still not the champ, so Ive got a lot to prove." Their long-anticipated rematch is headlining the first major card on the UFCs packed fall slate. Veteran heavyweight Frank Mir will take on Josh Barnett, who returns to the UFC after an 11-year absence, while featherweights Chad Mendes and Clay Guida also will meet. Pettis hometown crowd cant possibly expect something to top the Showtime Kick, but this bout means more than the lightweights first meeting. Henderson (18-2) is the UFCs 155-pound champion, while Pettis (16-2) is the only man to beat him in more than six years. But Pettis kick has lost none of its lustre in the time since that WEC bout in Phoenix, Hendersons hometown, in December 2010. One version of the highlight has nearly 5 million views on YouTube, and its a staple of MMA highlights packages. Even after 18 months as the UFCs lightweight champ, Henderson is still stung by his only defeat in his last 21 fights. Henderson wasnt knocked out by the kick with 65 seconds left in the final round, but it clearly swung an exciting, tight fight in favour of Pettis, who claimed the belt with a unanimous decision. "Anthony let it all out and landed a pretty cool kick," Henderson said. "And ever since, Ive been working to redeem myself. Beating up the next guy, the guy after that, beating up the guy after that, that was redeeming myself -- working past that one moment in my life." Henderson has excelled by becoming an effective points fighter, battering his opponents with flurries of less-than-fearsome strikes adding up to decision victories. Henderson hasnt stopped an opponent since April 2010, but he seized the UFC lightweight title from Frankie Edgar early last year and defended it three times -- twice by razor-thin split decisions over Edgar and Gilbert Melendez. He always knew Pettis was lurking in the background, waiting for a chance to repeat his spectacular win. The fighters are cordial and complimentary toward each other, but not friendly. "We have never sat down and discussed it," Henderson said of their last bout. "In my head, I knew that wed be facing off at some point in time again, so there wasnt a real big need for anything like that." Hendersons detractors are hoping Pettis is the antidote to the champions style. Pettis is a crowd-pleaser, with a taekwondo background and superlative striking skills. "Its not like I just won the (last) fight off of just one kick," Pettis said. "I put the work in the other rounds to be in that position. Ive got a lot to work for." Pettis might have won the lightweight belt before Henderson even got a chance to get his hands on it, if not for a debatable career choice. Unwilling to wait around for the next title shot after Edgar returned from an injury in 2011, Pettis accepted a bout against Guida, who upset him. Pettis has fought just three times since, winning twice by dramatic knockout, but also sitting out most of 2012 with injuries. Pettis would have been forced to wait even longer for his shot at Henderson, but challenger T.J. Grant pulled out of the matchup with a concussion last month. Pettis was contemplating a move down to challenge featherweight champion Jose Aldo, but he eagerly seized a second chance to take on Henderson in his hometown. "You cant blame me for trying to get a title shot," Pettis said. "Thats what its all about. Every fighter wants to be a champion, and I was right there. Ive been getting ready for a title shot since January, and its August now, so you cant blame me for trying." He was 75. The Spanish football federation announced the death early Saturday, saying Aragones died at a Madrid hospital. He had been battling leukemia. Federation president Angel Maria Villar said Aragones would be remembered as "very special" -- both for his contributions to Spanish football and as a person. "With him we have lived the beginning of an extraordinary phase in football as well as for Spanish society," Villar said. "This has been a painful dawn for our football." Aragones had a successful playing career as a sharpshooting international forward who earned 11 caps for Spain, and then spent the rest of his life as a much-travelled coach. However, he will mostly be remembered for what happened on June 29, 2008, when his team beat Germany 1-0 in Vienna to claim its first major title in 44 years. "Luis Aragones changed the history of Spanish football," Spain captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas said. "And for that we will always be thankful." The Euro 2008 triumph was the culmination of Aragones four-year reign as Spain coach, having taken over a team that for the last 20 years had earned a reputation for always coming up short in major tournaments. But Aragones instilled a new sense of belief in his players, even after losing to France in the second round of the 2006 World Cup. He also made the team adopt the quick-passing "tiki-taka" style of football made famous by Barcelona, and which his players came close to perfecting at Euro 2008. Led by Barcelona midfielders Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta -- and the goalscoring of David Villa -- Spain went undefeated through the tournament, but needed a penalty shootout against Italy to advance from the quarterfinals. While Aragones stepped down after the tournament, the team went on to win its first World Cup two years later and then added an unprecedented third straight major title at Euro 2012 under his successor Vicente del Bosque. "Without a doubt, our current run of success is a result of his legacy," Del Bosque said on Saturday, after paying his respects to Aragones family. "He had a long history of coaching experience and he had a special appreciation for the game." But Aragones time in charge wasnt without controversy. He made a racist slur about France striker Thierry Henry -- who is black -- during a training session in October, 2004, and followed that remark with an outburst about Englands colonial past.dddddddddddd His comments were believed to have prompted ugly racist chants directed at Englands black players during a friendly against Spain in Madrid. The Spanish Football Federation refused to bow to pressure to fire Aragones, although it fined him 3,000 euros, a punishment which many felt was too lenient. Denying he was a racist, Aragones explained that his comment about Henry was an attempt to motivate forward Jose Antonio Reyes, and he received important backing from several black players he had coached previously. In February, 2007, Aragones won a legal appeal against the Spanish Committee for Sporting Disciplines ruling that his behaviour could have fostered "violent, racist or xenophobic acts." Spanish media also often complained about his grouchy demeanour and had regularly called for his dismissal during the two years before the teams triumph. There was another uproar toward the end of 2006 when he dropped the national teams all-time leading scorer and captain, Real Madrids Raul Gonzalez, arguing that he was past his prime. It proved a masterstroke. The team embarked on a 22-game unbeaten run which culminated with the 2008 title, making Aragones the oldest coach to win a European Championship title. Despite the victory, the Spanish federation made no attempt to persuade him to extend his contract and five days later he moved abroad for the first time to take charge of Turkish club Fenerbahce, a couple of weeks before his 70th birthday. "Im leaving because there wasnt more done for me to stay," Aragones said at the time. His playing career began 43 years earlier, when Aragones joined Atletico Madrid. He scored 123 times in 265 games for the team -- the second highest in its history -- and helped the club win three Spanish league titles and two Copa del Reys. It also reached the 1974 European Cup final, where it lost to Bayern Munich in a replay. Aragones, nicknamed "The Sage of Hortaleza" in reference to the Madrid suburb of his birth, was then appointed as Atletico coach and led the team to the 1975 World Club Championship, the 1976 Copa del Rey and the 1977 league title. He coached Atletico on a total of five occasions and he had two spells each at Mallorca and Real Betis. He was also in charge of Barcelona, Espanyol, Sevilla, Valencia and Oviedo in a career total of 757 games, a Spanish league record. Aragones is survived by his wife Pepa, five children and 11 grandchildren. ' ' '

LONDON - Southamptons resurgence continued at Selhurst Park as Ronald Koemans side beat Crystal Palace 3-1 Friday to move back into the top four of the Premier League. Many thought the bubble had burst on Saints astonishing start to the campaign after an embarrassing League Cup exit to third-tier Sheffield United made it five straight defeats in all competitions.Southampton brought that miserable run to an end against Everton last weekend and impressively racked up another big win on a wet day in south London against Palace, where Sadio Mane, Ryan Bertrand and Toby Alderweireld netted in a 3-1 victory, which saw Scott Dann score a late consolation. The defeat means Palace have won just one of its last 12 top-flight matches with fans jeering manager Neil Warnock. The team made the announcement after Saturdays 6-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. RHP Kenny Giles will be called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill Adams spot on the roster.ALAMEDA, Calif. - For a general manager who preaches building through the draft, Reggie McKenzie has struggled to find impact players his first two years in Oakland. With all of his picks on the first two days for the first time in three drafts with the Raiders, McKenzie is looking to add players who can be part of the foundation of the rebuilding project in Oakland. "Its my goal and the Raiders goal to hit on my picks, and to be right in everything we do," he said. "This year, Im more excited. I cant call it pressure. Im more excited because of the foundation that weve built this off-season." The Raiders enter the draft with the fifth overall pick and also have choices near the top of the second, third and fourth rounds. Oakland has traded its fifth- and sixth-round picks away but does have three selections in the seventh round. The Raiders didnt pick until 95th overall in 2012 because of previous deals. But McKenzie was unable to find any hidden gems as none of the six players selected started a single game last season. Oakland had premium picks a year ago, but first-round cornerback D.J. Hayden was hampered as he recovered from heart surgery and struggled in his limited playing time. Second-round offensive lineman Menelik Watson barely made it on the field because of injuries. "I want to get it right every year, with every pick," McKenzie said. "Will you be 100 per cent right? Absolutely not." Here are five things to watch with the Raiders when the draft starts Thursday night: QUARTERBACK QUANDARY: The Raiders entered the off-season in need of finding a starting quarterback. After trading a sixth-round pick for Matt Schaub in March, McKenzie no longer needs to fill that hole through the draft. "Thats still a position that well look at, but I think what it does is, you dont feel that pressure that you have to go out there and try and draft a quarterback," coach Dennis Allen said. "You kind of let everything fall to you now." WIN NOW: The Raiders have spent the first two years under the leadership of McKenzie and Allen tearing down the franchise after years of poor management under late owner Al Davis.dddddddddddd. Now they are in the rebuild mode, but owner Mark Davis is losing patience after consecutive four-win seasons. McKenzie said that does not put pressure on him to find players who can contribute immediately. "You draft for the future," McKenzie said. "You dont draft for right now. Thats not the way I do it." GOING DEEP: One of the deepest positions in this draft is receiver, where more than a dozen players are projected to go in the first three rounds. Even after adding veteran James Jones in free agency, the Raiders could look for a playmaker in the draft. Clemsons Sammy Watkins is considered the best of the group, but the Raiders also could wait to get a quality receiver in the second or third round. "If I feel like this guy is an impact player, Im not going to bypass him just because theres some other good, solid receivers," McKenzie said. "When youre comparing great to good, Id rather have great." DRAFT DEALINGS: McKenzie has not been shy about making draft-day trades. He has moved down in the draft four times in his first two years to add additional picks, including dropping nine spots in the first round last year to take Hayden 12th overall and add the pick for Watson in the second round. "Thats what makes it fun — the uncertainty," he said. "But I cannot plan that at all. I can just be hardheaded and stubborn and say, Im not moving. But thats not my style." UNDRAFTED GEMS: A GMs work is not done once Mr. Irrelevant is picked. McKenzie has done a good job finding some gems in the undrafted free agent market with receiver Rod Streater, quarterback Matt McGloin, punter Marquette King and offensive lineman Lucas Nix all making contributions the past two years after joining Oakland as undrafted free agents. PINEHURST, NC - As the years second major tees off on Thursday morning, here are a few things to consider: The Golf Course For the first time since the Second World War, there is no rough at the national championship. Instead, there is whats being called Native Areas. This is how Donald Ross created the course and this is how Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore restored it.Rather than being one-dimensional and having to hack it out of the rough, hitting it off the fairway now means a bit of a lottery. You might end up with a perfectly clean, if somewhat sandy lie or you could end up in a tangle of the wiregrass. If that happens, its like old times and youll be hacking out to the fairway. Depending on whom you talk to, its either a 50-50 or 60-40 or 80-20 situation that youll get a good result in the scrub. It will make for some interesting times. The Phil FactorWe all know that Phil has been runner-up at the U.S. Open six times and that the first of those came here, at Pinehurst back in 1999. We also know that he wants to win this tournament more than any other, to complete the Grand Slam. But we also know that Phil hasnt played very well this year and has struggled on the greens to the point that hes changed his grip coming into this week. Hell use the claw grip, which he says is better for the six to eight footers that will be key for this week. As much as Phil will tell you everything is great, that he loves the course, that his game is coming around, you have to think that the odds arent in his favour here. Oh CanadaGraham DeLaet will complete the Grand Slam here this week – not in terms of winning but just teeing it up in his fourth major. Sometimes we forget that hes still learning his chops in the majors and its a big step up to the majors. Yes, he is ultra-talented with a game that is suited well to this type of set up. In some ways, what he doesnt know may actually help him. In golf sense, DeLaet will always live and die by his putter and this week he is also going with a new putter grip, adopting a left-hand-low style that he says is working for him. History is not on his side this week – the last time a first-time entrant won the Open was way back in 1913. Of course streaks are made to be broken. WeatherRight now, Pinehurst No. 2 is baked out and dry. There is lots of run in the course and the greens are firm. But the weather forecast is for rain over the next four days, (although so far, predictions of rain havent materialized). If that comes true, it will, as Rory McIlroy said, take the fire out of the course. It will aid the longer hitters and, if there are delays, make it tougher on those who have little patience. In short, it will change the number of golfers who can win this tournament and thats why a handful of players are doing the rain dance here this week. ImaginationIts a buzz word in golf. Along with creativity. But here at Pinehurst, there really is a need to think about just how youre going to hit a shot. With so many run-off areas around the greens, youre going to have to find the right way to get the ball close to the hole. So that means a) putting it up; b) chipping it close; c) use a hybrid to bump it; or d) some other club to get it close. The guy who puts its beside the cup will be deemed the most imaginative golfer of the week (instead of the champion golfer of the year). GreensThe greens at Pinehurst No. 2 arent necessarily small in overall size, but the effective area that can be used is tiny. In fact, on some of them, less than 25 per cent of the overall space can be used for a pin. These are not unlike Augusta Nationals putting surfaces, where hitting the right area – not just the green -- is a requirement. Some are more generous than others while a few are absolutely diabolical. McIlroy said the second is just such a green. He estimated that less than 20 per cent of the field will hit that green in regulation. Who Will Win?The golfer who will win this week is one who can drive it long as the course has some length. And it will be the player who can loft it way up in the air, as youll need some height to hold the greens. And it will be the player who has some creativity (see above) for those missed green recovery shots, and it will be the golfer who has a hot putter. Put those all together and I think your winner will be . . . Sergio Garcia.
